Toward the end of my senior year of high school, I was having some type of intense 1:1 with my AP French teacher when she asked me what I wanted to do with my life. I think because the question wasn’t coming from my guidance counselor or my mom I answered honestly: I just want to read all day.

I grew up in a house that was across the street from a library. I didn’t visit that library often, but I could see it from my bedroom window and walked or drove past it daily. It was a small stone building next to a parking lot. When I did go, it didn’t feel weird or special. It felt like an extension of my home.

These are not book recommendations as much as, just, books I happened to read this year. I don’t think all of these books should be read by more people, necessarily, but they should be read by the right people. Here’s last year’s list.

  • Started learning acoustic guitar. (I still can’t play an F bar chord, but I can play an F7.)
  • Walked the entire west side of Manhattan, tippity bottom to tippity top.
  • Learned basic SQL, thanks to Jose Marcial Portilla.
  • Wrote about a relationship and a restaurant.
  • Ran 638.6 miles according to my tracking app (!). That’s like running from…
